Be the change

I’m sure a few people are looking at this post and thinking “WTF? Why’s Sheckler getting light on Wheelbite?”
Well, when The Sheckler Foundation raises $57000 for A.Skate and their 10 city tour to raise awareness about autism and hold skatecamps to benefit the kids, that’s a lot cooler than another jersey barrier wallie*. Giving back is what it’s all about and the Be The Change and Skate For A Cause event definitely did that.

Heart Child The Movie

Here at Wheelbite, we try and support charities and foundations that use skateboarding as a tool to remedy problems.
A.Skate is a foundation dedicated to helping children with autism. You can read an interview we ran with one of it’s founders Crys Worley here.
Heart Child The Movie is the story of Crys Worley, and her creation of the A.Skate foundation, inspired by her own 9 year autistic child, Sasha.
Please take a minute to vote for Heart Child at indiewire.com here or make a donation here.

Skate for a cause

Ryan Sheckler raised $50000 for A.Skate at the Etnies Lake Forest demo last weekend. It’s always cool to see skaters getting together to help out oneanother. More footage here via Skateboarder Mag.

Skateboarding is a great way to relieve pressure, stress and anxiety. It also keeps you relatively fit and introduces you to some amazing people and places along the way. Autism is a hyper sensory condition that prevents a person from interacting and socialising with their surroundings. When Chrys Worley, John Pike and Peter Korvonen launched A.Skate Foundation they confronted the reality of autism with the remedy of skateboarding. What begun as friendly get-togethers quickly gained momentum and is now an organisation dedicated to supporting children and parents suffering from autism through the healthy stimulation of skateboarding. I was introduced to A.Skate Foundation when they worked together with Girl and Deluxe in holding skate clinics for autistic kids. It was great to see people promoting skating and helping people at the same time. A challenge and rare feat to achieve. Chrys took time off from her incredibly busy schedule as a mother, dental assistant, and all around fantastic person to answer some questions and tell us more about A.Skate and why skateboarding can help relieve the stress and prove therapeutic to those that really need it.
